Scaling Impact: How East Java’s SMEs Are Becoming Leaders in the Low Carbon Economy

The transition to a net-zero economy is no longer a distant goal, but it has become the new standard for business competitiveness. In East Java, a vibrant hub of industry and innovation, a pivotal shift is underway. Carbon Addons, in collaboration with the East Java Provincial Office of Industry and Trade and the Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP), has successfully concluded the Low Carbon SMEs Accelerator (LCBA), a landmark program empowering 13 visionary Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to transform climate risk into business resilience.Fig 1. Participants of the Low Carbon SMEs AcceleratorThis initiative is a critical local implementation of the 1000 Low Carbon Brand Movement, designed to bridge the gap between intent and action. For SMEs often burdened by technical complexity and high costs, the LCBA provides a clear, accessible roadmap to measure, reduce, and communicate their carbon footprint. From Carbon Literacy to Strategic ActionThe accelerator journey was built on a rigorous, three-phase framework, taking participants from basic awareness to verified climate leadership:Phase 1: Foundations & Measurement: Participants utilized the proprietary Carbon Annalist platform to move beyond guesswork, quantifying their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By establishing accurate carbon baselines, these businesses identified their emission hotspots—the first step toward meaningful reduction.Phase 2: Target Setting & Leadership: Participants moved into strategy, adopting the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology to set ambitious, time-bound climate goals. They also embraced the Ambition, Action, Advocacy (AAA) framework, weaving climate leadership into their organizational DNA.Phase 3: Reduction Strategies & Disclosure: The final stage focused on execution. Through Workshop 3, led by Winda Yuantika (Project Manager, Azeus Ltd.), participants learned to apply the Mitigation Hierarchy and MACC (Marginal Abatement Cost Curve) frameworks. These tools allowed them to prioritize cost-effective initiatives, such as energy optimization and supply chain restructuring, ensuring that sustainability contributes directly to their bottom line.Validating Credibility: The Low Carbon Brand DisclosureThe program culminated in the Low Carbon Brand Disclosure Presentation, where participants pitched their climate roadmaps to expert reviewers, including Adi Reza Nugroho (CEO, MYCL) and Arlieza Raudhah Riyanto (ESG Domain Specialist, Azeus Ltd.).In this presentation, participants synthesized their measurement, target setting, and reduction planning into a transparent disclosure document. Validated by industry experts, this process ensures that their climate narratives are scientifically credible, operationally feasible, and resilient against the risks of greenwashing.Fig 2. Presentation from House of Diamonds IndonesiaCelebrating East Java’s Climate PioneersThe LCBA program achieved significant milestones, successfully transforming 13 business participants into climate-conscious leaders. Throughout the journey, participants recorded a total of 2,593.78 tCO2e using the Carbon Annalist platform, set 13 ambitious SBTi targets for future-proof growth, and successfully completed 13 Low Carbon Brand Disclosures.Fig 3. Top Performers of the Low Carbon SMEs AcceleratorWe are proud to recognize the 13 businesses that committed to this transformation:Agatha, Baratie Makmur Semesta, Dirsinata, Dus Duk Duk (PT. Kreasi Karya Raya), Gischa, House of Diamonds-Indonesia, PELANUSA, PT Hacava Agritech Nusantara, PT. Arthawenasakti Gemilang, THE HOMEMADE, UD BEKAL, Upject, and Yu' Sa.While every participant demonstrated incredible growth, we extend a special commendation to our Top 3 Performers: Dus Duk Duk, House of Diamonds Indonesia, and Baratie Makmur Semesta. Their commitment to robust data and actionable roadmaps sets a powerful benchmark for SMEs across the region. The Path ForwardThe success in Surabaya proves that the barrier for our SMEs is not a lack of will, but a lack of accessible infrastructure. By equipping businesses with digital tools and practical mentoring, Carbon Addons is proving that sustainability is a powerful engine for growth. As we look to the future, the mandate is clear that the shift to a low-carbon economy is an opportunity to lead, not just comply. We invite all industry leaders, SMEs, and policymakers to join us in this movement. Let us build a future where every Indonesian brand is a Low Carbon Brand—competitive, resilient, and ready for the world. Are you ready to future-proof your business? Sewing a Second Life from Used Denim: Lia and Upject's Transformation into Data-Driven Low-Carbon Fashion

Sewing a Second Life from Used Denim: Lia and Upject's Transformation into Data-Driven Low-Carbon Fashion

For Lia, a pile of worn jeans is not the end of a consumption cycle, but rather a canvas for a new story. Stemming from a deep concern about the increasingly uncontrolled fast fashion culture, this female entrepreneur from Mojokerto founded Upject—an upcycled fashion brand that transforms post-wear denim waste into high-value bags, shoes, and accessories.Fig 1. Lia, Founder of Upject, is calculating her business's carbon emissions through the Carbon Annalist Platform."As a woman, I fully understand the allure of fashion trends. However, the more we buy, the more fabric waste we produce. I thought, 'If we don't start with small changes ourselves, how long will this waste continue to choke the Earth?'" Lia explained. She specifically chose denim because it's notoriously water-consuming during production and slow to decompose, making it one of the largest contributors to latent emissions in the fashion sector.Lia's journey challenging the mainstream hasn't been smooth. Educating consumers to appreciate products made from recycled materials is one thing, but convincing the supply chain is a far steeper challenge. Many local artisans refuse to partner with us because the upcycling process is considered far more complicated than cutting new fabric from the factory.Fig 2. Upject’s product from denim waste into sustainable fashionHowever, Lia's climate leadership was truly tested and forged when she joined the Low Carbon SMEs Accelerator (LCBA). Initially, the concept of carbon accounting felt difficult and unheard of to a small business like Upject. "I used to think that as long as I used recycled materials, my business was sustainable. It turns out I was very wrong. There are still many operational metrics that need to be improved," she admitted.LCBA provided Lia with access to Carbon Annalist, a carbon management tool that transformed the way Upject operates. Through intensive mentoring, Lia successfully transformed her confusing daily operational data into an accurate Carbon Baseline Profile. "At first, it was quite confusing because it was so detailed. But from there, I discovered new facts. It turned out that things I hadn't realized, like the efficiency of air conditioning, gas, and production logistics, were contributing significantly to emissions," she said.Fig 3. The walking mannequin is part of her advocacy to consistently inspire others through the use of Upject recycled products. Now, this data has become Lia's primary tool for setting emissions reduction targets for her business. Beyond production, she has transformed herself into a "walking mannequin," always wearing her own recycled products as a form of daily advocacy in her community.Lia's story with Upject is empirical evidence that MSMEs don't need to wait until they become multinational corporations to practice measurable climate mitigation. With the support of LCBA, Lia demonstrates that a single piece of used denim, when measured and managed with the right data, can become a beacon of hope for a truly sustainable future for the fashion industry.Writer: Thoyyibatun NafisahEditor: Mohammad Naufal

From Used Cardboard to Measurable Climate Action: Dus Duk Duk's Resilient Steps Towards Net-Zero Operations with LCBA

Used cardboard often ends up as a pile of trash in the corner of our house. However, in the hands of the Dus Duk Duk team, this material is transformed into works of art, functional furniture, and a tangible step towards a circular economy future. As a creative industry company that consistently explores 100% recycled cardboard, Dus Duk Duk has big ambitions. Behind their creative process is the leadership of two young women: Sonya (26), Creative Marketing, and Nissa (29), Operations Supervisor, and also Dus Duk Duk's representative in the Low Carbon SMEs Accelerator. Both represent the face of a young generation who reject the idea that sustainability is merely an option.Fig 1. Sonya and Nissa in the Low Carbon SMEs Accelerator"Many people think that used cardboard has no value. Our biggest challenge is changing people's mindsets. For us, it's not trash, but a new, much more environmentally friendly material," said Sonya. Nissa added, "As young people, we feel compelled to take full responsibility for our business activities. This vision aligns with the company's pulse."However, good intentions alone are not enough to combat the climate crisis. A turning point for Dus Duk Duk came when they joined the Low Carbon SMEs Accelerator (LCBA). This program opened their eyes to the fact that true sustainability doesn't stop at using recycled materials but also demands accountability for scientifically measurable emissions. For the first time, Nissa and Sonya used the Carbon Annalist platform to map their operational carbon footprint. This data-driven system bridged the technical gap that had plagued MSMEs. "Through LCBA and Carbon Annalist, data that initially felt very technical and complex has been unraveled. We now know exactly where our largest emissions lie, and what improvements we need to implement," Nissa explained.Fig 2. One of Dus Duk Duk’s products: home furniture from recycled cardboardBased on this understanding of the carbon baseline, Dus Duk Duk now not only recycles but also leads advocacy. They implement an after-sales program that includes planting mangroves for natural offsetting, and collaborate with communities in Karanganyar to produce eco-friendly merchandise that directly empowers local women in their supply chain. For Dus Duk Duk, LCBA has shifted their business narrative from merely a creative industry to a climate creative business pioneer. They prove that the transition to a low-carbon future can be initiated by anyone, with the simplest steps, and from a single piece of cardboard.
